Today I want to talk about something very simple yet seems to be one of the most difficult things for people to do. You might be wondering what it could be and think you already know… maybe you do… but maybe you don’t.
When we were born everything was done for us. We slowly got to the point of responsibility as we know it as adults. We became more responsible gradually, yet, we always maintained a balance. I understand this is a generalization and some children end up in responsible positions far beyond what would be expected of a child. If that’s you, then really pay attention to what I am sharing.
We maintained a balance in ways like, go to school (this is responsible) and go out and play (the balancing action). I really don’t need to go any further than this to make the point. Of course we all need to be responsible but most adults are lopsided and out of balance, doing for everyone else and always putting themselves last. This is not natural and causes problems. And this idea was reinforced one day on a plane…
I wasl sitting on a plane waiting for the plane to taxi to the runway for takeoff and the flight attendant said, “If the oxygen mask falls, put yours on first… even if you’re with children.” It makes sense, doesn’t it? How could we help others if we can’t breathe?
Then I thought… “WOW!” How about if we transfer that instruction to our lives? Do we put our oxygen mask on first? Are you taking care of yourself so you can take better care of those around you when needed? This is how we maintain a balance in life and remove self pity, resentment, regret and disappointment. The young bird was pushed out of the nest to fly and be free… not to be imprisoned in another nest to never fly again.
Find your balance and do something for you each day. And don’t forget to play… we’re all still children at heart.
