Today I am sitting here after spending 3 days in Atlanta. I’ve been there before and like the city, as many people do. Now I know when it’s referred to as Hot-lanta, they mean the atmosphere more than the actual weather. But I got to tell you, as far as the weather goes, at least this past weekend, it wasn’t so hot. Here in New Hampshire it was the same. Either we are having high temps for this time of the year or Atlanta is having some low temps…. or maybe a little of both.
Anyway, being a hypnotist, I watch people a lot because human behavior is something I have an interest in. And when I travel I have the opportunity to watch a lot of people in a lot of situations. The airport is especially humorous to me because regardless of the fact that a person knows there is no resolution when there is a cancellation or delay, they will still let the barrage of expletives flow and their frustration build by the milli-second.
Actually, it never ceases to amaze me at how much time, energy and thought someone will spend going over the problem while all along they could have found a solution if they redirected that time and energy. I recall a time when I had a flight booked 4 months in advance and when I arrived at the airport, I was bumped. When I approached the attendant at the desk I simply said, “So, tell me what we are going to do to get me where I’m going.” She looked up with a bit of amazement and said, “You must be one of those positive thinking people.”
My reply was, “Well, it won’t do either of us any good if I act like most of these other people, now will it?” Short story shorter, I got the last seat on another flight to Las Vegas, my original destination. Even though I was scheduled to fly direct to Vegas, I ended up going to Ft Lauderdale with a 6 hour layover and got to Vegas 12 hours later than expected, BUT… I got there. I wonder if the rest of the people that were around me ever got where they were going… and when.
You see, life does involve moments of frustration and stress. Stress management isn’t difficult, allows you to live longer, better and get more results in less time using less energy. Think of that the next time you feel like arguing or blaming someone for something instead of finding the solution.
